Fall of the Warlock Kings
Capitol of the Duchy of Amara and seat of the Duke of Amara. This smallish city was long ago only a middling outpost of the Dragon Empire. As the Imperial power declined the city became a haven for slightly dangerous and daring elements; a bit decadent, even. Rowdy orcish settlers added to the feel, and in the last two centuries many humans have swarmed in. While still owing titular obedience to the Dragonborn Emperor, Amara has gone its own way under the rule of the Dukes. The city has been possessed of an Infernal Vicar, in service to the Shattered Jewel, for three generations, making it one of the newest of Vicars, though one that has been involved directly in ruling the realm for all that time. Standing equal to the Duke, the Warlock King of Amara allows most of the day to day affairs to be handled by the still-extant remnants of the old Imperial bureaucracy. War with the Great King has been expensive and unpopular among the louche inhabitants of the city, but the Vicar did not wish to fall under the dominance of another of his kind. Some months ago, the Vicar’s tower collapsed in scarlet flames, destroying much of the northern quarter of the city in fire and rubble, and the Vicar has not been seen since. The Shattered Jewel is thought to have turned against him, and no new Vicar has appeared, which makes the story seem likely. The Duke is now asserting his power, aided by a human warlord named Juniper Amon who commands respect among the smugglers and pirates of the harbor quarter. With war again imminent with the Great Kingdom, the future in Amara is uncertain.
