Fall of the Warlock Kings
The ancient empire of the Plains of Chan, founded by the hobgoblins and their subject races from the city of Chan. The Empire included the cities of Dun Astarte, Susteen and Hodon and the areas between them, and exerted a protectorate over the Matriarch and her city of Carnelian. The dwarves of Lughan were at first also a protectorate, but broke away. Tarn in the west resisted the forces of the Empire, which were, by modern standards, rather small. The Empire endured for some hundreds of years, often riven by civil wars as the ruling hobgoblins were overthrown by their tiefling subjects, and then later seized the throne once more with great bloodshed. The coming of the Orcish Horde from the Northern Wastes spelled the end of the Empire, with Chan captured and burned after a decade of fighting. The royal family was taken away to captivity by the Padishah of the Horde, and the last claimant, seeking aid in Susteen, was murdered by the Duke of that city, who proclaimed himself independant. Though many have tried to revive the Chan Empire, the fiercely prideful cities of the plains have resisted all such efforts, until the rise of the Great King. Many ruins of the Chan Empire still dot the plains, abandoned but not always peaceful, as magical treasures, traps and guardians can still sometimes be found within.
