Fall of the Warlock Kings
The second city of the Starbreed, Coriole is located on the shores of the Sea of Stars where the Dakayis River flows into the water. Originally built as a frontier post to secure the border of Oriel with the Dragon Empire, as the latter polity faded so did the importance of Coriole. Several times in the wars with powers of the Plains of Chan, the Starbreed felt it wise to shift many of their valuables and non-combatants southward to Coriole, and so in the years after the fall of the Chan Empire, when warrior bands and would-be conquerors raged across the plains, Coriole became something of a second capital. With the rise of the Warlock Kings, whose power made conquest to some degree impractical, Coriole again declined, and drifted into the orbit of Viir. The merchants of the island city established factors in the city to trade with Oriel, and in time came to dominate the place entirely. Coriole is presently viewed as neither part of Oriel nor exactly part of Viir, though definitely within the sphere of Viir’s influence. It retains a sort of autonomy, appointing it’s own ruling council in imitation of the Council of Captains, but there is a Viiri Ambassador who, for all intents and purposes, rules the city, since advice he gives to the Corioli Council is always accepted. The city has many grand buildings, but most are poorly maintained, their uses long abandoned. Some have been subdivided into tenements, or are forsaken and given up to squatters and strange cults. Most of the Starbreed have left, returning north to Oriel or drifting south to Dalian, and the city’s populace is a mongrel horde of hobgoblins and their subraces, tieflings, humans, gnomes, orcs and gnolls from the deserts. There is a major fleet stationed in the city, meant to keep an eye on Dalian, comprised of more than a score of fitted warships and numerous support ships, but at present, this force is somewhat diminished, with most of the fleet having sailed to seize Ullien Kail and not yet returned from that mission.
