Fall of the Warlock Kings
The former northern capitol of the Dragon Empire, and now a city held by human overlords. Dorian Tal is the last major harbor in the north of the world, and in the summer enjoys a pleasant climate, though the winters can be very cold indeed. Because of the gentle summers, the Dragon Emperors declared Dorian Tal to be their northern capitol, and it remained in the orbit of the Empire for longer than some cities. Amara to the south had drifted out of imperial control before Dorian Tal, but eventually, the splintering of the Empire reached this city as well. Emperors began to fear leaving their Kydon Kail, because several were ousted, or nearly ousted, in coups while they were gone, and the northern capitol no longer saw the banners of the Imperial household raised over the old palace by the sea. Humans settled the city in goodly numbers, shunted there by the Dragon Emperors who wanted no part of them in Kydon Kail, and wanted them indeed as far away as possible. At first they loyally supported the Emperors who had granted them some few privileges in the city, but after a couple of generations, these were taken for granted, and the Emperors were far away. A human fighter overthrew the last dragonborn governor 90 years ago, but immediately sent messages pledging his respect for the Emperor of the time, along with generous donative gifts. He recieved back a tentative approval of his new governing status, subject of course to Imperial power, which has never been exerted in Dorian Tal since. The Kings of Dorian Tal, who rule over the whole of the north now, have for three more generations continued to send occasional supplies to Kydon Kail, and always on ascension to the throne the new monarach will send the customary messages and gifts to the Emperor. The Kings attend the coronations of Dragon Emperors with a finery that nearly matches, but never threatens, their titular monarchs. For all these years, the Shakata family that rules in the city have feared that without imperial sanction, some other adventurer will overthrow them, as they did the last governor, but now with the sanction of time they are growing complacent, and with the fall of Kydon Kail to the Great King, the current ruler Jala Shakata, first queen of Dorian Tal, appears to think that perhaps she can do without the suzerain at all. Some of her advisors suggest that leading an army to liberate the Emperor would be the correct choice, but as almost all of these advisors are dragonborn, nothing else could be expected of them. Dorian Tal is the last city of the east to have a significant navy, and some are concerned that the Great King means to strike for it, to finally have a force to challenge Viir with. Dorian Tal is a city of timber, in the main, sturdy buildings rising from stone foundations and sometimes a half-floor of masonry, but wood thereafter. In the winters, the river freezes over most years, and becomes the scene of the great Ice Carnival, with plays and dances and games of all sorts, and occasionally disaster when an unexpected thaw arrives.
