Fall of the Warlock Kings
The lands ruled over by the Great King. Centered on the city of Carnelian, the Great Kingdom occupies all the Plains of Chan as well as some areas outside the plains, and includes a number of satrapies: Dun Astarte, Tarn, Wildwood, Hodon, Susteen, Dun Lugail, Lughan and Kydon Kail. Each is ruled by a Satrap, in most cases one of the Vicars who formerly ruled over the area. The Satraps report directly to the Great King, and possess great civil authority, but no real military power. Total authority in the Kingdom radiates outward from the Great King, however, and his surrogates, such as his Legate, can in most case overrule decisions even by the Satraps. In general, however, the Great King seeks to avoid conflict with his powerful vassals, and does not often inject his own decisions into their fiefdoms. The Great Kingdom has no heir apparent; there are dozens of children of the Great King, all called Prince or Princess, with none give any special treatment above the others. There is much maneuvering among the King’s wives and their families to place one or another of the Great King’s children into a favored position, but so far nothing has come of it. The Great King has executed several of his wives and children who have plotted against him, or plotted too far, really. Plots he seems not to mind; it is acts that make him reply with violence. So far, under the will of the Great King, the Kingdom is relatively stable. However, in the last year, with the King and most of the Satraps incapacitated or killed, the seams in the ramshackle structure are showing, and few can predict how long it can hold together if the Great King does not soon recover.
