Fall of the Warlock Kings
Long ago, Susteen was a small walled town atop a hill, independent but weak. It was taken by the growing might of the Chan Empire many centuries ago, and made into the regional capitol by the Chan of the time. At the close of that Empire, the last claimant to the Chan throne fled to Susteen for aid, and was taken and killed by the Duke of Susteen of the time. The city then maintained a proud independence for many years, often at war with Dun Lugail, Tarn or Carnelian, and locked in a struggle with Hodon for many years, until the Dukes conquered the coastal city and made it part of the Duchy. Susteen was host to one of the Infernal Vicars very early, perhaps even as early as Carnelian, but the Vicar in Susteen kept herself hidden for many years, as did her successors. Eventually, however, it was in Susteen that the first true Warlock King arose, when the fifth (some say sixth) Vicar seized the Ducal Palace, killing all the royal family in one night. Susteen, and Hodon, became the first Warlock Kingdom on that night, one hundred and fifty years ago. The Vicars ruled with strength, if not always with wisdom, and Susteen became a greater power than it had ever been under the dukes, exacting tribute from Dun Lugail and Viir. But the rise of the Great King undid Susteen, which attempted to play the other powers of the Plains of Chan one against the other, until at last every other had fallen to the Great Kingdom. Susteen was conquered in a brutal and quick war, their army routed in two great battles over the course of the summer eighteen years ago. The Vicar submitted to the Great King at the gates of Susteen, and spared her city the savage looting that sometimes came with resistance. Susteen is a powerful walled city still, with three walls surrounding the old fortress-city on the hilltop in the midst. Some 65,000 people call Susteen home, and there are numerous suburbs. The Army of the Great King is made up in large part of Susteen levies, as the city still prides itself on military tradition, though it is not allowed to field its own army. The Twins are the favored gods of the city, inflaming the passions of the locals, and their great Scarlet Temple rises just beneath the citadel. The current Vicar has been missing for some months, and is thought to be dead, but the cavernous chambers beneath the old Ducal Palace still hold many secrets, and few even in militant Susteen are brave enough to tread those dread halls.
