Fall of the Warlock Kings
The greatest servants of the Outer Ones, the 18 Vicars are the most powerful warlocks on Afyon, and likely in the world. Each Vicar serves at the whim of their patron, it is said, though in truth most are only removed from their office by age or murder. There are few warlocks bold enough to serve the Outer Ones directly, and each aims to be Vicar in time, some more patiently than others. Some Vicars train up successors; others seek to kill any who might challenge them. Each is, in general, concerned with matters that often do not make sense to the inhabitants of Afyon. Most have seized mundane power over some portion of the world, either as direct rulers or as advisors to a ruler that they in effect totally dominate. Most are viewed as capricious and uncertain, but they reward their followers well in most cases, and are currently the most certain source of power and patronage. A year ago, one by one, the Vicars suffered difficulties, with most of them dying or being rendered mad or crippled, and in general no new Vicars appearing. Some handful of the Vicars still function fully, and one or two new Vicars have replaced the fallen, but several of the Vicarates are completely empty. No one is certain what has happened to cause these problems, though speculation exists that the Nameless Fire, patron of the Great King, attempted to do something peculiar, and was then followed by almost all of his fellow Outer Ones, who feared that the Nameless Fire would achieve some sort of advantage. Whatever act the Nameless Fire took, if its fellows followed it, the act has proved disasterous to all their power.
