Fall of the Warlock Kings
Founded before the rise of the Chan Empire in the city of Astarte, the Patriarchy was meant as a rival to the Matriarchy of Carnelian. The Patriarch was a warrior-priest dedicated to the Lord of War, who trained a small body of followers and seized the small but strong settlement of Astarte (now Dun Astarte). His followers grew quickly, but he did not escape the attention of the more powerful Matriarch, who dedicated herself to eliminating her rival. His forces fell to hers at the end of a five year war, and were all slain and buried in a great mound. The Patriarch himself was impaled and left to die, but rumor has long persisted that he did not exactly perish. All the settlements on the site have been cursed or haunted by a nameless, invisible dark force that kills, brings disease and makes for misfortune, a force that other cities have dismissed as paranoia or madness on the part of the Astarti. Some claim that worship of the Lord of War, and his minion the Patriarch, has been twisted to dark paths in the city, and has continued down all the long centuries. Now, in the modern era, a thing looking like a withered hobgoblin and claiming to be the Patriarch of old has been seen, and some claim to have spoken to it. It wishes to liberate the city which stands where once its old city stood, and rule over the inhabitants as it did, so briefly, 1500 years before. Few know what to believe, but it is certain that something exists which is claiming a title thought ill-omened by all.
